Bonded T1 MPLS Providers
Point-to-point circuits are only offered as t1, ds3 or OC (Optical Carrier) circuits. Because MPLS utilizes bonded t1 as an option, WANs (wide area networks) can now be far more scalable, and each location of the network can more efficiently be allocated the exact bandwidth needed for that specific that location on the network. With the recent advent of MLPPP (Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol) technology, bonded t1 can now function as one large bandwidth pipe, rather than multiple smaller (single t1) pipes. With MPLS networks, MLPPP and packet prioritization ( Class of Service) enables bonded t1 to deal much more efficiently with large applications and multiple services, such as VoIP, video conferencing, and routine data over a single circuit. Unlike fractional ds3 or full ds3, bonded t1 is provided over copper telephone wires. For this reason, bonded t1 is often installed for free, without the need for expensive build-out usually required for ds3. With bonded t1, up to 8 t1s can be bonded into a single pipe, for up to 12 mbps (megabits per second). If locations in a network need circuits which are 12 mbps, or less, bonded t1 is often far less expensive than fractional ds3. MPLS networks are commonly provided with all equipment needed. They are completely managed, and frequently monitored by the provider every 3 to 5 minutes, to ensure optimal performance. Often outdated frame relay or point-to-point networks can be replaced for free, with an MPLS network that is virtually turn-key, costs less monthly, has higher bandwidth and is far more efficient. The advantages and limitations of bonded T1
Writen by: Dennis Green
Bonded T1 is an excellent option for companies which need more bandwidth than a one T1 (1.5 Mbps) circuit can provide, but are not yet ready for the jump to fractional or full T3 45Mbps). Up to eight T1 circuits can be bonded, for up 12 megabits per second (Mbps). A DS3 (also referred to as T3) circuit is the equivalent of 28 T1s. Bonded T1s allow incremental growth (the addition of one T1 at a time, as needed), more efficient budgeting (the jump from a T1 to a T3 increases monthly costs by thousands of dollars), the elimination of months of waiting while a T3 line is installed to your premises, and the thousands of dollars it would cost to install the special wiring that is needed for a T3 circuit if your building is not already “lit” (wired for DS3). Bonded T1 is provided through pairs of twisted copper “telephone” wires. For this reason, bonded T1 is available to virtually any business in the US. Bonded T1 is often installed for free, and can be provided as managed (with router), or unmanaged (without router). Often managed bonded circuits will only cost a few dollars more than unmanaged. If your bandwidth needs exceed 12 Mbps, then fractional T3, burstable T3, or full T3 could be more efficient options, depending on your bandwidth usage patterns.
